Lightning Tree

I have no idea if this is what I think it is. A tree struck by lighting.
A few months ago Winne was on the hill taking pictures in a storm when one strike seemed to come awfully close and he high tailed it back home. Just recently we went out walking and found this tree, and both wondered if this is where the lighting hit.

It is the only tree marked like this and the markings seem to be chard into the trunk.

  1. It looks beautiful where you live Rose. I think that must be a lightning strike, or could the bark just split like that for other reasons? If the other trees are intact I'd go with lightening. What an amazing sight!

  2. Hi Caspin, good to see you.
Bark usually comes off of gumtrees in strips. These marks were like raised welts on the tree and if you scratched them off they were powdery.
I asked my mum about them, she lived in the tropics for years and they have a lot of electrical storms there, and she said that it did sound like it was a lighting strike.
